California Carrier Partner Updates

Here’s an overview of recent updates from our carrier partners. For details on any specific update, click on the related link.



  • Rate Pass: Statewide, Aetna’s second quarter rates remains unchanged for groups of 1-100 in California.
  • New Health App: Aetna’s mission is to build a first-class customer experience to help members achieve their best health. As part of that effort, the new Aetna Health App is available this month. It gives members the ability to have a more personalized experience to support them along their health care journey.


Anthem Blue Cross

  • Sutter Health Medical Groups: Anthem HMO and PPO members could be affected if Anthem and Sutter Health do not reach an agreement on a new contract. Sutter’s prior agreement with Anthem terminated effective 12/31/18; however, a transition period allows Anthem members to continue to access Sutter Health-affiliated medical groups until April 1, 2019.
  • Reimagined Producer Toolbox: Anthem has announced they are updating their Producer Toolbox. Make sure you take a few minutes to login to check out the latest changes. Click here to read our Newsroom story.


Blue Shield of California (BSC)

  • Forms Updates: BSC wants to remind brokers to use the Q2 2019 versions of the Employee Enrollment form and Subscriber Change Request form for business effective 4/1/29 or later.   • Triple Tier: The new CaliforniaChoice metal tier option gives your clients and their employees access to Platinum, Gold, and Silver tier plans. Click here for more information.


Health Net

  • Broker Bonus: Health Net has announced a $100 per member bonus for each new Small Business Group (SBG) sales with an effective date of February 1, 2019, through November 1, 2019. There is no limit to what you can earn. Click here for more information.


Kaiser Permanente

  • Multiple Bonus Opportunities: Kaiser Permanente is offering brokers several ways to earn a bonus; there’s the “Total Replacement” bonus, a Small Group Exchange bonus, a new group bonuses, and a “Value Demonstrated Bonus.” Moreover, if you write Small Groups in Santa Cruz County, there’s another bonus.   • New Plan: In response to feedback from brokers and clients, Kaiser Permanente has added a new plan between the Bronze and Silver tiers. The new Silver HMO 1800/55 + Child Dental could help you attract more new business.
  • Revised PEO Policy: Kaiser Permanente is now writing Small Groups with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) agreement. Employers must meet all of Kaiser Permanente’s Small Group underwriting guidelines, including group size requirements. For details, click here.



  • Form Change: Oscar has updated its Employer Enrollment Form for California, which is available here.



  • Well Deserved Reward: Your UHC clients who offer UHC’s wellness programs could win a $1,000 reward. The employer application deadline is March 29, 2019. More information is available here. Pass the word.
  • Ongoing Bonus: UHC is offering a bonus on each member enrolled in Small Group and Key Account groups through January 1, 2020. There’s an added bonus for Harmony and Canopy Health coverage. Download the UHC flyer here.


Western Health Advantage (WHA)

  • Underwriting Change: Due to a change in state law (S.B. 1375), WHA can no longer offer employer group health coverage to sole proprietorships and partnerships that do not have employees.



Anthem Blue Cross

  • Dental through Choice Builder: Anthem recently announced it has added a benefit carry-over to its Dental benefits. That means if employees in any of your Choice Builder groups don’t use all of their plan’s Annual Maximum each year, they could be eligible for a carry-over reward during the following Dollars saved this year could be available in the future, depending on their plan’s Claims Threshold. Delta Dental Vision

  • EyeMed Coverage to End: Delta Dental will be ending its Vision Program administered by EyeMed in July. Brokers can continue to quote Vision through EyeMed for groups effective prior to 7/1/19. Current groups with a July 1 or later renewal will terminate at the end of their contract term. Notice of a new Vision plan is expected in the near future.



  • Bonus Reminder: Humana’s Dental and Vision bonuses continue through July 31, 2019, on Small Group and Large Group business. The company is also making preventive care enhancements to its Dental PPO portfolio for 2019.



  • Bundle Savings: Your clients can shave up to four percent off their premiums when they bundle Specialty plans with Medical benefits. Get details on the UHC website here.
