Medicare Part D Creditable Coverage – 2027 Large Group Health Plans

pexels-cottonbro-8657366.jpg

New federal standards for determining Medicare Part D creditable prescription drug coverage take effect for plan years beginning in 2027. Under the revised testing methodology, some employer-sponsored health plans that previously met the requirements for creditable coverage may be classified as non-creditable beginning with their 2027 plan year.

To help California and Nevada brokers and employers navigate these changes, Word & Brown has collected Medicare Part D creditable coverage determinations from our fully insured carrier partners. The information below lists 2027 Large Group health plans in California and Nevada identified as non-creditable under the new federal standards. We will continue updating this resource as carriers complete their reviews and provide additional plan determinations.

Preparing for an Employer's 2027 Large Group Plan Renewal

Employers should pay particular attention to Medicare Part D creditable coverage when reviewing their Large Group health plan options for 2027. A plan that qualified as creditable in previous years may no longer meet the updated federal requirements, making it important to confirm the status of the coverage selected for the new plan year.

Employers must inform Medicare-eligible individuals whether their prescription drug coverage is creditable or non-creditable. We encourage employers to review this status during their annual renewal and distribute the appropriate Medicare Part D notice to affected employees and dependents before the new coverage becomes effective.

An annual Medicare Part D notice is also required before October 15 each year (no later than October 14) for Medicare-eligible employees and dependents, whether their coverage is creditable or non-creditable. Employers must also notify affected individuals when their plan's creditable coverage status changes.
